What's Reiki?
Reiki (pronounced “Ray-key”) is a simple Japanese energy-balancing method that is used by hundreds of thousands of people all over the world. Reiki was developed from Buddhist healing methods, by Mikao Usui, in the early 1900s in Japan. In other forms, energy healing has been practised around the world for at least 2,500 years.
Although Reiki is a healing system, it is also extremely effective as a way to help individuals increase awareness, insight, wisdom and personal growth. Our bodies are energetic in nature. We vibrate! Our bones resonate at lower frequencies while other parts such as our blood vibrate at higher frequencies.
This magnetic pulse is known as a bio magnetic field. In Eastern traditions this pulse is also known as Ki or Prana. It is interesting to note that scientists have found that measuring the magnetic fields of the body with magneto cardiograms and magneto encephalograms often provide a more accurate indication of what is happening in the body than traditional electrical measurements.
When a practitioner is performing a healing session, the energy that emanates from their hands produces a significantly larger bio- magnetic reading (7-10Hz – Theta and Alpha range) than a non-practitioner. These frequencies are associated with physical healing and ‘whole person’ balance.
Contentment, relaxation, decreased feelings of stress, fear and anxiety as well as a reduction (and in some cases elimination) of physical illnesses and mental conditions are common observations from clients after a Reiki session. There are countless case studies and anecdotal research verifying the effects of Reiki sessions.
Reiki in Public Usage
Nowadays, it is practised in UK hospitals and by people other than Buddhists. In fact, Reiki is increasingly offered in hospitals, hospices, and private practice settings, applied to a variety of illnesses and conditions. Those who receive such treatments report relief of symptoms from numerous health challenges, including mild mental health issues. Research shows that Reiki primarily helps in the reduction of stress, anxiety and depression, as well as relief of chronic pain — the last of which can bring on anxiety and depression or make episodes worse.

Why Reiki?
A typical client base reflects the range of issues that all practitioners meet, such as grief, depression, anxiety, anger issues, and also physical conditions such as pain, cancer, PTSD, the agitation caused by dementia and even terminal illness.
Of course, some people are not unwell and just enjoy the relaxing calm of Reiki but Reiki is an especially wonderful and effective tool in assisting the emotional and psychological effects of Cancer and PTSD because it is so safe, gentle, and non-invasive. The effects of energy work compound over time, so it’s best to plan on regular sessions when dealing with something as potentially devastating as Cancer.
We are all born with the power to heal ourselves. Our bodies are in a constant state of maintaining balance. It is that energy within that helps the body to repair and replace aspects of itself as needed. Reiki is the energy that connects our higher self with everything around us. We can use Reiki energy to help us balance our own energy and bodies. At the Dragonfly Reiki Academy, we teach something closer to the original Japanese Reiki rather than the ‘new-age’ versions popular in the West after its assimilation into American culture.
It Is More than Healing
Reiki as a spiritual practice for self-healing, is primarily a way to live a moral and ethical life, to heal oneself and others. When Dr Usui first formalised Reiki, he intended it to be a tool for spiritual growth. The physical healing that occurred was a side-effect of his increased awareness following his own spiritual awakening.
